Heel Pain Q & A

What might be causing this pain in my heel?

There are a number of conditions that could cause the pain you’re experiencing. Often such pain has its root in an irregular walking gait that places too much stress on your heel bone and on the attached soft tissues. Discomfort can also stem from a previous injury, or from a bruise incurred while walking, running, or jumping on a hard surface. Flimsy footwear and weight issues can also be at fault. These conditions can lead to a variety of issues with your heel including:

  • Achilles tendinitis (inflammation of the Achilles tendon)
  • Bone bruise or contusion bursitis (inflammation of the fluid-filled pads that cushion the joints)
  • Excessive pronation (an excessive amount of stretching and pulling on the ligaments and tendons that attach to the bottom back of the heel bone)
  • Haglund’s deformity (a bone enlargement at the back of the heel bone)
  • Neuroma (a nerve growth) or other soft tissue growth
  • Rheumatoid and other forms of arthritis

Two additional common culprits for heel pain are heel spurs and plantar fasciitis.

When should I call a podiatrist?

If you experience pain or inflammation in your heel that doesn’t go away, call Dr. Del Monte for a diagnosis. He will conduct a physical exam and, if needed, take X-rays to rule out any bone issues.

How might Dr. Del Monte treat my pain?

Depending upon the determined cause of your heel pain, Dr. Del Monte may choose to prescribe an oral or injectable anti-inflammatory medication. In some cases, targeted exercises can help, in addition to different footwear, taping or strapping of your foot, or the use of foot pads or heel inserts. Physical therapy may also be a source of relief.

Most cases of heel pain don’t require more advanced treatments or surgery. So if you’re experiencing any protracted pain or discomfort in your heel, call to schedule an appointment with Dr. Del Monte at Del Monte Podiatry.
