Gout is a less common form of arthritis, which manifests in irritation and inflammation. This is caused by a buildup of uric acid in the blood. This buildup of uric acid can sometimes lead to the formation and collection of small crystals in your joints, which can lead to discomfort.
If you find yourself waking up in the middle of the night or early in the morning with an acute and throbbing pain in your big toe, and you notice that your toe is swollen, you may have gout. This pain will likely last for a few hours, during which it may be too painful to walk. Less common symptoms include fatigue, a low-grade fever, redness, and increased warmth to the skin or affected joint. An initial attack of gout can resolve itself fairly quickly, within 3-14 days even without treatment. If attacks become more frequent, the symptoms can last longer and spread to other joints.
If you experience these symptoms and suspect you may have gout, call Dr. Del Monte for a clear diagnosis. He will conduct a physical exam and collect your comprehensive patient and family history. Then, in addition to a blood test and urinalysis, he will inspect the foot for nodules and/or an elevated temperature, and take a sample of fluid from your affected joint.
If a diagnosis of gout is confirmed, Dr. Del Monte will prescribe an anti-inflammatory medication to help reduce swelling. He may also recommend custom shoes, a removable cast, crutches, or provide you with protective shields and padding for your toes.
Again, if you suspect you might be suffering from gout, call to schedule an appointment with Dr. Del Monte at Del Monte Podiatry.
