Ankle Pain Q & A

by John B. Del Monte, DPM

What might be causing pain in my ankle?

There are a number of possible sources of your pain. The most common cause is a sprained (or twisted) ankle. A sprained ankle occurs when a foot or ankle accidentally turns inward or outward. This happens most often when one is playing sports, walking on uneven surfaces or takes a misstep on a slippery surface.

Other causes of ankle pain include:

  • A broken ankle
  • A floating bone in the back of the ankle
  • A fractured bone elsewhere in the foot
  • An injury which one or more of the metatarsal bones are displaced from the tarsus
  • Compression of soft or bony tissues within the ankle joint
  • Inflammation of the posterior tibial tendon
  • A fracture of the lateral process of the Talus bone, which is located on the outside of the ankle, above the heel bone
  • Diseased tendons

How do I know whether my ankle is sprained?

Depending upon the severity of your sprain, you may experience anything from mild pain, swelling, and joint stiffness to more severe pain, difficulty walking, and minor to extensive bruising.

How will Dr. Del Monte treat my sprain?

Dr. Del Monte’s first priority will be to reduce the swelling to your ankle by having you rest your ankle, apply ice and compression, elevate your foot, and use crutches when walking. He may also provide you with several range of motion exercises and stretches. A wobble board / balance board can also help to strengthen the ankle.

If you have a more severe sprain, you may require surgery. In cases where infection is present, Dr. Del Monte will prescribe the proper medication.

What should I expect if my ankle pain is not caused by a sprain?

Your ankle may be fractured; If X-rays show a fracture, Dr. Del Monte can perform any number of surgical procedures, including:

  • Ankle arthroscopy (during which pieces of cartilage or bone debris are removed from the joints, or damaged ligaments are repaired)
  • Ankle distraction arthroplasty (a procedure during which an interior scaffolding is created to support the lower leg and foot)
  • Ankle fusion
  • Ankle replacement
  • Fracture repair

In other cases, Dr. Del Monte can prescribe medications to reduce pain and/or inflammation, slow down the process of bone loss, target an inflammatory disease, or prevent joint damage.

So if you are experiencing protracted pain or discomfort in your ankle, call to schedule an appointment with Dr. Del Monte.
